Why Auburn-Washburn? What Principals Value Here
Leadership autonomy. Auburn-Washburn operates with a decentralized leadership model that places principals at the center of building-level decision-making. Principals are empowered to lead their schools in ways that reflect their students, staff, and communities, while district leaders serve as collaborative partners—offering support, perspective, and guidance when needed. Your expertise matters here, and your leadership is trusted.
A collaborative leadership community. Principals participate in regular leadership meetings that provide dedicated time to connect with colleagues, celebrate successes, discuss challenges, and work together on district-wide initiatives. You’ll become a part of a leadership community that shares ideas, supports one another, and understands the realities of the role.
A district with a clear vision and major long-term investments. Auburn-Washburn’s work is guided by a five-year strategic plan shaped by feedback from thousands of community members. This plan led to a unanimous Board of Education decision to pursue a $145 million bond—approved by voters in 2022—to invest in the district’s future. Construction and renovation began in 2023 and will ultimately touch every school, supporting early learning, innovative instructional spaces, and expanded career and technical opportunities. Principals who join Auburn-Washburn step into a district that is aligned around a shared vision and actively investing in its people and facilities.

Our Culture
Welcome to the Auburn-Washburn School District! We are proud to serve nearly 6,000 students across 128 square miles in southwest Topeka – the state's Capital City – and Shawnee County. Auburn-Washburn is an exceptional place to learn and work because of our engaged patrons and business partners, informed and supportive families, dedicated and talented staff, and, most importantly, outstanding students who arrive each day ready to learn and grow.
Our decisions are always guided by one priority: what is best for students. This focus has helped Auburn-Washburn earn a reputation as a respected, high performing, 6A district. Our students thrive academically and benefit from a wide range of co-curricular, performing and fine arts, and athletic opportunities. They consistently perform and compete at high levels locally, statewide, and nationally.
We do not view our nearly 6,000 students as a whole, but rather focus on the strengths, needs, and aspirations of every child, every day. Our district includes seven K-5 elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. We also have an early childhood program and two alternative learning centers.
Across all schools and programs, we prioritize building genuine, supportive relationships with students and families. With those relationships at the core, we are able to deliver rigorous academics, foster essential skills, and prepare every learner for success in school and beyond.
